In the second century BCE, following their victory over the Seleucid forces, the Israelites, known as the Maccabees, came to Jerusalem and purified the Temple. This event is commemorated in the festival of dedication, known as Hanukkah. The oil they found to light the temple's menorah (candelabrum) was only sufficient for one day, but miraculously, the oil lamps of the menorah remained filled for eight days. Hence, the Hanukkiah has eight branches. The ninth candle on the central support serves as the helper candle and is used to kindle the other candles. It represents the divine source of light, enabling us to spread the radiance of faith and hope.

The picture shows the Maccabees: the leader of the rebellion, the priest Mattathias, and his five sons: John, Simon, Judas, Eleazar, and Jonathan. The text "We came to drive away the darkness" is a translation of popular Jewish Hanukkah song "Banu hoshech legaresh".

Design by Ephraim Kalish
